Chapter Initiatives
1995
Hermanos established the Hispanic Heritage Coalition for the first Hispanic Heritage Month celebration with Latino undergraduate organizations. The group was renamed and is currently the Coalition of Latino Student Organizations (CLSO).
1995
An Hermano was the co-founder of the Latino Business Society which later was renamed the Latin American Business Organization.
1996
Phi Chapter hosted the inaugural Latino Bienvenida with undergraduate organizations to welcome Latino students to campus. As of 2024, Phi Chapter has hosted the event for 28 years in a row.
1997
Phi Chapter established La Unidad Latina Book Fund to support UMD Library’s efforts to purchase books focused on contributions of Latinos to US history.
1998
Phi Chapter established its annual Toy Drive done in collaboration with Latino organizations on campus.
Toy donations were made to Mary’s Center, Catholic Charities, and now to Sanctuary DMV.

Adopt-A-Highway located at UMD University Blvd and Adelphi Road intersection.
2005
Phi Chapter hosted its 10th year Chapter Anniversary Gala.
2008
Phi Chapter Hermanos were lead planners for the Carolina Rojas-Bahr Tree planting and memorial in Hornbake Plaza.
2008
Phi Chapter Hermanos were primary contributors in the establishment of the US Latino Studies Program (Minor Concentration).

Phi Chapter Hermanos were primary contributors in the establishment of the US Latino Studies Program (Minor Concentration).
2009
Phi Chapter Hermanos assisted in the founding of Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA)
at UMD.
2015
Phi Chapter hosted its 20th year Chapter Anniversary Gala.
2022
Phi Chapter established the Maria Sempertegui Legacy Book Scholarship to support current and future Terrapins that are presented during Phi's annual Bienvenida. Learn more about the Legacy Book Scholarship.
2023
A Chapter Founder and an undergraduate Hermano co-founded the Latino Pre-Law Society at UMD.
Hermano Awards
Order of Omega
The Order of Omega is a leadership society for fraternity/sorority members, only admitting the top 3% of members on our campus. Students must excel academically, must have leadership experience, and serve their community to be considered.
Kalegathos Society
The Kalegethos Society honors graduating seniors in the fraternity and sorority community who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, service, and commitment to advancing the values of Fraternity and Sorority Life at the University of Maryland. Inductees are selected for their lasting impact on their chapter, council, and the broader campus community.
Carolina Rojas-Bahr Award
The Carolina Rojas-Bahr Award for Outstanding Latina/o Undergraduate is given to students nominated because of their accomplishments during their college career; an outstanding academic record, contributions to the quality of campus life, exceptional community service involvement or contributions as a student employee. The award is named in honor of the incomparable work of former UMD faculty member, Carolina Rojas-Bahr.
La Raza Unida Award
The La Raza Unida Award, which translates as “the people united,” is presented to the senior class student who has contributed most significantly to the advancement of the Latino(a) student community at the University of Maryland and in the broader community as well as the general interest of the University.

Model Citizenship Award
The University of Maryland Model Citizenship Award, is the most prestigious University award presented to two members of the graduating senior class who during their collegiate career has most nearly typified the model citizen and have contributed significantly to the general advancement of the interests of the University.
